Today we went to the LRC to research the staple foods of a country of your choice. There is a handout to go in your portfolios on which you have to write the name of your chosen country, its staple food and three recipes from that country which have that staple as the main ingredient. May 28, 2014
Today we discussed staple foods of Newfoundland and the reasons for them being staples. We talked about how much of these foods we eat in our own homes and how we prepare them. We also discussed how staples have changed over the years. Then I introduced staples from other places around the world. Today we began a "dinner party" assignment. You have to imagine that you are hosting a dinner party for eight people. Then, using the cookbooks provided in class, you have to create a menu of at least five courses. On separate handouts, write out the complete recipe, being careful to pay attention to the yield. Today we discussed about knowing exactly what we're eating. We discussed growth hormones and antibiotics that are injected into meats and what this is doing to our overall health and well-being. We then watched a Marketplace episode called "Superbugs at the Supermarket" in which they test samples of chicken from grocery stores across the country for bugs that have become immune to antibiotics. Today you were assigned a "potluck" assignment. On October 22, our class will have a potluck in the nutrition lab for lunch (during period 4). You need to sign up for either an appetizer, a main dish, a side, or a dessert. Please come see me to get the handouts as there are things that need to be typed up and handed in on the day of the potluck. I also distributed folders with tables of contents so that we can keep the material for our portfolios organized. We then watched a short video on knife and kitchen safety. |
